Securing API Keys in Command-Line Scripts

Illustration of an API key stored in an environment variable

An API key embedded in code easily leaks through repositories, logs, or terminal history.

Key Points

  • Store keys in environment variables or a config file that is not committed to the repository.
  • Add secret files to the ignore list before the first commit.
  • Give keys the minimum access needed and rotate them regularly.
  • Never print keys to logs, and mask their value in error messages.

If a key ever leaks, revoke and replace it straight away without waiting.
